How Trackers Actually Work

A typical tracking setup works something like this:

  4. The same script is running on thousands of other websites
  5. The tracker now knows you visited all those sites

Modern trackers have gotten more sophisticated. Some use fingerprinting, which involves collecting details about your browser, screen resolution, installed fonts, and hardware to create a unique profile that follows you without needing to store anything at all.

Others use CNAME cloaking, where a tracking domain masquerades as a first-party domain to bypass ad-blockers. And link decoration (adding tracking parameters like ?fbclid= or ?gclid= to URLs) lets platforms know exactly where you came from.

Why This Matters

The data collected about you is used to build detailed profiles. These profiles influence the ads you see, the prices you're offered, and in some cases, the content that gets surfaced to you. Data brokers buy and sell these profiles, so information collected on one site can end up in the hands of companies you've never interacted with.

Beyond advertising, tracking data has been used in less expected ways, such as being sold to insurance companies, law enforcement, and political campaigns.
